Kanakajon's Mission: "Spread the Aloha"This authentic old
Vintage Ceremonial
Tongan Tapa Bark Cloth ("Ngatu")
is more than just a painted bark cloth sheet, it is a brilliant work of original
Polynesian
island art. Through many hours (approximately 500) of labor intensive work, this extraordinary bark cloth was produced.
This specific bark cloth is marked with the text "
Koe Tokelau Feletoa
" - a kupesi (stencil) from Vava'u, Tonga. The woman who designed this pattern was
Hulita Tu'ifua
and she came from the northern part of the
Village of Feletoa
- hence the name: Tokelau (north) Feletoa (the village of Feletoa). The Tokelau Feletoa is said to be the flesh of the tuna fish when cut across the middle part. The pattern of the flesh is reflected. This Ngatu is also designed with
Fo'i Hea Fuoiiki 'e tolu
. These three small hea fruits arranged in a triangle, demonstrate how men plant their yams.
The design is hand painted with locally-sourced organic natural pigments. This exceptional museum-worthy piece is an important
cultural treasure
and
symbol of wealth
,
that displays wonderfully anywhere and would be a fine addition to your South Pacific island paradise collection (or
Tiki Lounge
). The bark cloth is in excellent condition for its age (see photos), and measures a total of 29.25 square feet (6.5' x 4.5'). This original Tongan Ngatu Bark Cloth is priced at only per square foot or 7 total. This Ngatu has always been rolled up when not in use and has never been folded, therefore it has no unsightly crease marks. Mahalo and Aloha!
